There are nights in football that live forever (in fact - more about this night can be read in this week's Tale from the Sideline below - making it even more immortal). Not because of television cameras or medals the size of dinner plates, but because of what they meant to the people who were there. The players. The supporters. The volunteers. The families standing along the sidelines roaring on their own. And for Glasnevin FC, Friday the 22nd of May 1981 is one of those nights.

Under the lights of Tolka Park, the Diggers lined out against Raheny Boys in the Amateur Football League Challenge Cup Final. Kick-off was 8pm sharp, shoulder pads were optional, moustaches were compulsory, and somewhere in Dublin there was probably a goalkeeper smoking a cigarette at half-time. Proper football.
Now, 45 years on, the club will come together once again to celebrate that famous occasion.
On Friday 22nd May 2026, at the exact same date and time as that historic final, ex-players, club legends, volunteers and supporters will gather in Tolka House Lounge from 7.30pm for what promises to be a brilliant night of memories, stories and nostalgia.

Already over 50 former Diggers are expected to attend, with club President Marie Lenehan also joining the celebrations. There’ll be memorabilia on display, plenty of football chat, and no doubt a few heroic stories that improve slightly with every passing decade. And proving that once a Digger always a Digger truly stretches across oceans, Brendan White, Dave King and Gary Reidy will also be zooming in from America to join the celebrations.

All current schoolboy and schoolgirl coaches, committee members and volunteers are very welcome to attend. Nights like these are important because they remind us that today’s club was built by generations of people who gave their time, energy and heart to Glasnevin FC long before astro pitches and WhatsApp groups were ever invented.
The jerseys may change. The footballs may get lighter. The knees may creak a bit louder these days.

But the spirit of Glasnevin FC remains exactly the same.

And if the walls of Tolka House could talk on the 22nd of May, they’d probably tell us one thing:

Once a Digger, always a Digger.
