History Of Glasnevin FC

Glasnevin Football Club is one of Dublin’s oldest and most storied football institutions, with roots stretching back more than 140 years. Founded by workers from the nearby Glasnevin Cemetery, the club quickly became a central part of the local community. This connection earned the club its enduring nickname, “The Diggers,” a proud identity that still reflects its origins and strong ties to the area today.

From its earliest days, the club has been embedded in the fabric of Glasnevin, a historic north Dublin suburb known for its deep cultural, educational and sporting heritage. As football grew in popularity across Ireland, Glasnevin FC developed alongside it, providing generations of players with the opportunity to compete, improve and represent their community. As the game has evolved, so too has Glasnevin FC. The club has expanded significantly in recent years, with teams now competing across schoolboy, schoolgirl, academy, senior and Over 35s football. Glasnevin FC currently fields teams in the Dublin & District Schoolboys'/Girls' League (DDSL), the Leinster Senior League and the Amateur Football League, continuing a proud tradition of football participation across all age groups.

The growth of girls football within the club has become an especially important part of the club’s modern story. What began with small numbers has developed into a growing pathway for girls football at Glasnevin FC, creating new opportunities for players across multiple age groups and helping to shape the next generation of The Diggers.

The club has also placed a major focus on inclusion and accessibility through its Football for All programme, ensuring players of all abilities can enjoy football in a welcoming and supportive environment. This commitment reflects the club’s belief that football should be open to everyone in the community.
