Glasnevin FC v Shelbourne FC
13th February 2010
Albert Collage

Glasnevin’s winning streak continues as they overcame Shels and in turn leapfrogged them in the league with a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Brian Blood got his name on the score sheet with a contender for goal of the season. He first controlled the ball, dragging it from the air with his right foot before turning and directing the ball into the top corner with his left foot, leaving the keeper flat footed and helpless. It was a perfect way to show the domination of the team over the visiting Shels team.
The Diggers should have put the game to bed in the first half but chances from McLoughlin, Byrne and Hearns where not taken.
Shelbourne where not causing too much damage going forward but they’re pace up front was keeping the diggers defence on they’re toes throughout.
The start of the second half saw Glasnevin continue to dominate the attack and they picked up they’re second goal of the game when Daryl Slein converted a Kenny McLoughlin corner into the net.
The game seemed to be virtually over until Shel’s where handed a lifeline with a goal that could and should have been avoided. A Shelbourne corner was played directly into Keeper Alan McHue’s hands and he quick kickout failed to find a diggers jersey. Instead the ball was sent straight back into the box and after an initial block by McHue, the visitors managed to scrape the ball over the line.
Shels upped they’re game after that goal and for the remaining 20 minutes they put the diggers defence under sustained pressure. However they’re best opportunity saw a flashing shot rise over the crossbar. The introduction of 3 subs failed to spark the diggers into any real attacking action but in the end a solid team performance saw the home side come out with another vital 3 points.
The Digger’s are away to Ongar Rovers in the Maher Cup this Saturday with an early kick off at 12 o’clock.
