Glasnevin FC (3)v Beaumont Athletic (1)
07th November 2009

Glasnevin got they’re season back on track with a convincing 3-1 victory over mid-table Beaumont on Saturday. The conditions where anything but ideal as the heavy and soggy pitch made sure that everyone had to be careful of they’re touch on a usually sublime surface.
Having had two men sent off in the previous outing, the diggers mad a few changes to the side. 4 goal hero Karl Hearns moved back into the centre of midfield alongside Colin Daly. Jake Warren reverted to the right wing with Brian Blood and Kenny McLoughlin starting up front, both players returning after recent ankle and hamstring injuries.
Despite the heavy conditions both teams started the game brightly, passing the ball along the floor and producing some nice interchanges in the midfield. The diggers should have been ahead early on when Colin Daly swung in a corner to the head of Brian Blood but his header was just over. Soon after the first goal of the game would come, and against the run of play to Beaumont. An unfortunate slip by Ian Daly allowed the away attacker to get into the box and finish well with what was they’re first shot on goal in the game.
The diggers didn’t allow the goal to dampen the spirits and they where on the attack straight from the kick off. Karl Hearns and Colin Daly where dominating midfield, breaking up play, passing and supporting the attack at every opportunity. The diggers reward came soon enough when a beautiful defence splitting pass from the centre of midfield released Brian Blood and after controlling the ball settling himself, he powered the ball past the hapless keeper. Just rewards for they’re earlier efforts. Glasnevin kept up the tempo and Blood could have had himself a hat-trick before have time. First off in what was nearly a carbon copy of his earlier goal, he was released through the middle but this time his shot went over the bar. Soon after Karl Hearns released Eddie Riley down the left wing and his cross to the near post was met by Blood but again it went agonisingly wide.
Glasnevin’s only change in the game came when Jake Warren was forced off with only 25 minutes gone after suffering a recurrence of an injury. Rafael Nunes took his place on the right of midfield. And so the sides went off at half time level on goals but with the home side clearly in control of the game. Having found it hard to get into the game on the right hand side, Rafa was moved up front alongside Brian Blood with Kenny moving into the midfield for the second half.
The second half was more of the same with the diggers having the more of the chances on goal. Beaumont for they’re part where playing some lovely short passing football but without that killer instinct in the final third. And they’re lack of firepower up front came to haunt them as Glasnevin took control of the match. Kenny McLoughlin cut in from the right hand side to slot the ball past the away keeper with a fine finish.
Beaumont responded by changing they’re system to a 3-4-3. The change resulted in them having a few opportunities on goal but in general the diggers defence held strong against them. When they did manage to get through, they found digger’s keeper Alan McHugh in fine form also.
Glasnevin wrapped up the game late on when Rafael controlled a large clearance up field and turned his man well to race onto goal and slot the ball calmly past the Beaumont keeper for the diggers third of the game.
The away side's heads where down and Glasnevin should really have added to they’re tally with Rafa causing a lot of problems up front but the final ball was just lacking for the home side. In the end it finished 3-1 to the diggers with the home side very happy with the overall display and looking to continue they’re resurgence in 2 weeks time after the international break.
The win also moves them off the bottom of the table by two places and know if they take advantage of they’re games in hand they will be in touching distance of the top two.
