It took extra minutes to sort this one out as Swords eventually sent their name to the hat with a 1-0 victory. A decent scalp for the Balheary side too, and, if Saturday was anything to go by, they are on an upward curve.

The first half was very much a feeling-out period. Swords' best chance of the half came when Ian Gleeson broke free on 33 but his control let him down at the vital moment.

Karl Hearns almost gave the visitors the lead on the blow with a delightful effort with the outside of his boot that came back off the crossbar.

Hearns went close again early in the second half and on 59 Rovers should have took the lead. Karl Andrews skipped past a couple of tackles and his by-line ball was perfect for the incoming Steven Hall, but the scuffed his effort from close in.

Eight minutes later Wayne Cox's vicious inswinging free from the left was touched onto the crossbar by Alan McHugh. Three minutes later, Keith Kearns met a James Lynch cross from the left with an acrobatic volley that flew just wide.

With a quarter of a an hour left on the watch Steve Hall got on the end of a move involving Gleeson and Cox and he looked to have given Swords the lead. McHugh though somehow got a toe on it and averted the danger at the expense of a corner.

David 'Froggy' Barker entered the fray after a spell on the sidelines through injury with 14 left. His impact was immediate. A pinpoint free from deep within his own half found Gleeson loose but his header was tame and McHugh had little difficulty in dealing with it.

He then got by a couple of tackles to set up Hall but the striker's low shot just missed the upright. The referee blew with the teams tied at zero and we headed to extra-time.

Six minutes in, the home team scored the goal that would ultimately seal the tie in their favour. Gleeson's low effort was parried by McHugh and Wayne Cox was the quickest to react and slot home. The 'Diggers' pressed for an equaliser but Swords held out for the remaining 14 to go through to the next round.
